Audiobook Review – Broken Lies

Broken By Lies audiobook cover art

I had no idea how much I would love Alex the day he walked into my life. He changed everything. The way I breathed. The way I thought. The way I loved. He brought me back to life. He gave me strength and a safe place to land. And then he broke me.

Finding Emilia was a chance to do something good for once in my life. I wanted to change. She believed I was her savior. I ached to be. She found her way into my heart and claimed it as her safe place. I should be telling her the truth about me…. Instead I break her with lies.

This book is one hell of a ride. It goes by very quickly. I honestly felt like I finish this book in five minutes. This is a book about Emilia and Alex. I love this duo so much. This book starts off with Emilia and something really bad happens that set her on her way to Phoenix Arizona. It is here that she meets Alex. He is in his early 30s and he is gorgeous. How she meets him is under some really shitty circumstances. She is staying at a city hotel and he feels compelled to help her. So Emilia goes and is invited to stay with Alex at his penthouse apartment. Basically she is there until she can get back on her feet. She gets a job at a coffee house. This is where she met Sam. Sam gets on my nerves in this book. He is trying to get in between Alex and Emilia and I don’t like it. Overall I think Rebecca Shea writes a really compelling story. I mean I truly did feel like I listened to this within five minutes so the fact that I got so sucked and that I kind of was like wow it’s over already tell you something about her ability to write a really good story.

Now onto our narrators. We have Erin Mallon. If you’ve been a reader of my blog for a while you know how much I love her. She is a fantastic voice actress. Every time I hear her I’m just happy because she really brings out the story. This book was no exception it was fantastic. Her range of voices is great she has a different voice for every character and she had to do some accents in this book and I found them to be good. Now we have the male narrator Vikas Adams. This is the first book I’ve heard Mr. Adams read for and he does a decent job. He does have a range of voices and his accents are pretty spot on for the people he has to do them for. Some of this book takes place in Mexico so some of the Spanish accents he had to do sounded spot on. Personally I’m not a fan of his female voices but that’s nothing against him typically when it comes to mail narrators I’m not a fan of when they do a female voice. He kept me engaged and I really liked him voicing Alex I think he did a very good job. When he voiced for Sam I wanted to punch him in the face just because I didn’t like the character. Overall together I think they are a great combination. when it comes to reading they really did bring the story to life for me and I am excited to listen to the next book where they are also narrating together

The idea behind this read-a-thon is to make more of a dent in all the books you have on you TRB lists, I think this I a great way for me personal to get through a lot of the audio books I have on my wishlist which acts as a TBR list and audible.

The quiet pond has a whole story of Castor the star collector, It is really cute, Just click on the first three words of this paragraph and it will take you to their post and you can read the story for yourself. They just of it is that for every book that you finish you are helping Castor collects moire stars. Thus meaning that you book are the stars. I have never seen a read-a-thin that has such detail well maybe one of the Harry Potter themed ones.

Winter Book Tag

Hello, wonderlandians! Today I will be answer some question for a tag because I have not done one in a while. I found this tag over at Chelle’s Book Ramblings.

Questions

1. Snow: Name a book that gave you the chills

Maybe Now audiobook cover art

Maybe Now by Colleen Hoover. This book was everything this year. I didn’t even know that this book existed until a few months ago. Yes,you read that right. I was so happy to found the book. It was just what I needed. When I read the first book I always like the way that it ended but this book added such a new outlook on to whole story. If you want to read my thought that click the blue link and you can read all of the thoughts on this book.

It is one the I would recommend but only if you have read maybe someday and maybe not. Seriously, these are three books that you have to check and if you have never read a Colleen Hoover book before this is a great series to start off with.

2. Happy Holidays: Name your favorite Holiday book

There is book that I loved It was called the Last Boyfriend by J.S Cooper.

The Last Boyfriend (Forever Love Book 1) by [Cooper, J. S.]

This is not a Christmas book. I just remember reading this book one during Christmas. This is when I was broke and had no job becasue I was in college. When I was getting my associates degree I was not in a place to both work and go to school. I was able to get a lot reading done becasue all I was really able to do what school work and reading. I remember reading and loving this book.

It gave me all the feels. Now thinking about it this is one book I should add to my TBR for next year. I want to do a reread challenge. There are so many book that I was to reread and I will actually have the time since I will be graduation with my bachelors degree. So I will have lots of time that will be freed up and I. I am very excited about this.

3. Crackling Fire: Name a Book you want to throw in a fire.

There are two books that I would throw in to fire to keep my self warm.

Image result for New Moon book"

Enough said.

4. Treat yo self: Name a fake book that if made, you would pay any amount of money for. (ie. another harry potter book, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory that came with Chocolate)

I’m not sure but it would have vampires and magic. If it was like Vampire Academy or The Lux Series. I would be down for that. We need another great YA series I feel like there have not been some in a long while.

5. Hot chocolate: Name a book that was sweet at first then became bitter.

For this one I’m going to have to draw blank. I don’t know any books that started off sweet but then became bitter. For these kinds of things I DNF a book if I don’t like it.

6. New Year’s Eve: Most Anticipated book of the new year!

Again for this one I’m gonna have to draw a blank because I don’t really keep up with what’s popular. I find a book that I like and I just read it. I typically tend to read authors who are more indie. Yes I know how that sounds but I really do you read a lot of independent others like once you are self published. It’s not that I’m not in the main stream box it’s just I have found that the more hyped up a book is and the more main stream it is the less I like it. So for me I find a lot of authors through either of them contacting me or I work with a PR company. The but the best way that I find them is bad going on Amazon and looking at the books that are like $.99. I have found some of my favorite authors that way. This goes back to you when I wasn’t able to work and go to school at the same time so because I wasn’t working I had to be very strategic with the money that I was given throughout the year. So for Christmas I would get like $300 in gift cards to iBooks or Amazon and that had to last me until my birthday. Which my birthdays in May so it was like six months and then from my birthday until Christmas. So I became really strategic with how are use my gift cards and how are use my money. So I found a lot of great deals for books that were less than five dollars and I found some amazing authors that way.

7. Family Time: Name a literary family that you would want to be a part of…

So I’m sure a lot of people know that my favorite book is vampire academy so I am assuming this is me assuming you may not assume this but I ask people in my real life and they’re like oh the vampire academy books you want to be related to rose. But that is not the case here there is a book series that I really really love it’s called the Ashen touch trilogy by Kristy Nicolle and I would love to be related to Haedes. And I probably spelled that wrong. But he is amazing I love the character that she wrote and his lineage is freaking awesome and that’s where I wanna B.

8. Wishes: What book do you wish you could re-read for all the feels?

Dear Lord for this one there are so many. I would really like to read in for the vampire academy series again. I would also really love to read listen to the luxe series by Jennifer L Armentrout. I would love to revisit the demon blood series and I’m forgetting the author. It’s really been that long since I’ve read it. I would love to reread the twilight series I haven’t done that in like 10 years. I would love to reread beautiful bastard, Fifty Shades of Grey, the submissive trilogy, that this man series. I mean there’s honestly a lot Gabriel’s in Ferneau that’s becoming a TV show next year. I mean there really is a lot that I would love to re-read and I am making it a goal for next year to re-read and then kind of report back on if I felt the same way about the series. So look out for that next year.

9. Spread the Joy: Who do you tag?

I absolutely tag everybody to do that. Please please please if you do it tag me and let me know so I can please read your responses. The one thing I love about tags is that everybody can do them and everybody’s answer is different.

So if you guys enjoyed this tag please leave a comment down below and tell me what series would you like to reread? Also what book are you most anticipating before the new year?

Audiobook Review – Hot Asset

Hot Asset audiobook cover art

A sexy agent hounds Wall Street’s hottest new wolf in an exhilarating novel from New York Times best-selling author Lauren Layne. Ian Bradley is the definition of a Wall Street hotshot: seven-figure salary, designer suits, and a corner office. His drive off the floor is just as potent. Every woman who knows him has felt the rush. But now he’s met his match in Lara McKenzie – a woman with the power to bring Ian to his knees. An ambitious, whip-smart daughter of FBI agents, Lara is a rising star in fighting white-collar crime. Her latest case – the investigation of Ian Bradley for insider trading – could make her career.

She knows a scoundrel when she sees one, and Ian fits the bill: a cocky, ridiculously handsome bad boy with a slick swagger. She’ll do anything to prove he’s guilty. He’ll do anything to prove he’s not. But it’s only a matter of time before their fierce battle of wits gets oh so hot and personal. Now taking down Ian has become more than business for Lara. It’s become a pleasure-and there’s more at risk than she ever dreamed.

This is the first book I’ve read it by Lauren Layne. She is a fantastic writer. I found myself really being able to slip into the story with no problem. After reading the last series that I did which was the broken love series by B.B Reid. I knew I definitely needed something that was light hearted. That is exactly what I got with this book. This is not typically my area because it deals with government agents but I knew that I would like it because there was a bad ass guy on Wall Street and I love reading about that.

Lauren writes characters that you want to get to know. Lara was really fun. I really liked all of her dialogue as well as her inner dialogue as well. She says a lot of really funny things. Both of her parents are government agent and that is what she aspires to be. So for Lara Be able to join the FBI she Has to investigate Ian.

Ian is not your typical Wall Street wolf. While he is rich and plans to stay that way he definitely has a soft side. This is what I like to see you he wasn’t handed everything he has he had to work for it. He came from very humble beginnings and it was a great story to kind of get into.

Sarah Hyland as Lara.

When it comes to our narrators Samantha Cook and Zachary Webber are awesome together. This is the first I have heard Samantha narrate and her voice acting is very smooth. Her in fractions on words you can really feel the emotion when she is reading. I think having her there it really did help bring the book to life and the range of voices that she has is incredible. You can definitely tell that she is a pro at this. Zachary is one of my favorite know he is my all-time favorite male narrator. His voice is sex. Anything he reads a instantly love. And honestly he makes books 1000 times better. It is absolutely perfect that the author is so amazing and the two narrators paired together created a true work of art.

10,000 % recommend this book.

Thank you all for joining me here in our little part of wonderland. Please do not forget to feed the unicorns on your way out. As it is the holiday season they are granting wishes. So don’t forget to make a wish because you never know it might come true.

Audiobook Review – Fearless

Fearless audiobook cover art

Take one last ride with Keiran and Lake and the rest of the Broken Love gang in this fifth and final installment as they face stronger enemies and bigger obstacles while fighting to hold tight to the tattered existence of their love.

When faced with broken love….

Have you ever had the feeling you were a stranger?

Out of reach, I watched and mourned me.

Nothing moved. Breathed. Nothing lived.

I was in an alternate universe.

No longer an innocent.

I had blood on my hands, and I wasn’t even sorry for it.

I was only afraid for Keiran.

Of his reaction when the shock wore off.

It would be an explosion.

Of hurt, anger, and mistrust.

He’d know I lied.

And to him….

The betrayal born of my good intentions is worse than the act of murder.

…will you succumb to fear….

She was supposed to be my light.

The one who saved me from the monster.

But when I looked in her eyes that day, I didn’t see her.

I only saw my father’s killer.

Her love saved me from the monster.

Mine turned her into one.

…or will you be fearless?

BOOK REVIEW

I have to put a big ass trigger warning because there is a lot of triggering things in this book. I may not get all of them but I will try my best so here we go manipulation, obsession, possession, rape, death threats, psychological warfare and more. I don’t know there was a lot to this book and I found it weirdly intriguing. This is a dark romance novel.

If you have not read my other reviews on this series then you should because they kind of tell you about the stories but not to much to where you think I’m giving anything away. Fear Me, Fear You, Fear Us. and Breaking Love.

Finally we have made to the end of this series. We are finally back with Keiran and Lake. I think we are now a total of 5 years post the second book. So there has been a lot of time jumping here. Keiran and Lake it has been an interesting ride. I really do mean that. This series starting off as one thing and had ended in a different way than I thought this series would have ended. Keiran started off and still is a hard ass who has possession issues when it comes to Lake. Unlike in the first book now instead of wanting to hurt her for revenge he now wants to protect her. Which he tries to do. Lake however has other plans an end up lying and creating a very big mess. Without the mess though would we really have a final ending to the story. I really don’t think so.

Ok while we had flashback in the Fear Us and Breaking Love in this book it really is every other chapter and it kind of takes you out of the story. B.B Reid is really hand feeding you everything. There is no mystery. I would have to have some wonder in with this being the last book but no. The end though was cute and truth be told I would go through the whole experience again. The book kept me entertained which is really all I can ask from a series.

Ava Erickson and Teddy Hamilton were great as usual. They were one of the main reasons that I continued on with the whole story because of how much I love listening to them read.

So after reading all these review or if you read them all does this series sounds like one that you would you pick up. If you have read or listened to this series what did you think of this book?

Thank you for joining me here in our little part of wonderland. Please don’t forget to feed the unicorns on your way out.

In grade school, she penned tales on her parents’ typewriter and by middle school sold her own love and gossip magazines to friends. As a preteen at sleepover camp, Cass often told playful, steamy bedtime stories to her bunkmates.

Review

From the little research I did on this author it would seem like this is a debut novel for Cass Ford. I could not find any other book on amazon or audible. This was a home run for a debut novel. I was sucked into the world that Cass Ford has crafted. When first going in into the audiobook I thought I was not going to be able to finish. I will get more into that later in this review. I will had not to do with writing or the story itself. Cass has created a world that I will say that it opened my eyes to an industry that I will use her characters words here as seedy. Not only did I love this novel it was all educational. It deals with real topics. I will say though that the ending did feel a little rushed and seemed like there should have been more to the book. There was also times when our MCs have very poor communication. Other than those two thing I would highly recommend this book. It is very fast past and jumps right in.

Sierra Kline is a new to me voice actress. This is the part of the review where I thought I was not going to be able to finish this novel. When I first started this book I told you it jumps right in and the first voice we hear is a high pitched one that is kind of annoying. Later I did find out that this was a choice for that character and I applaud Sierra for that. Sierra was a able to capture that character very well because that character is very annoy and Sierra really brought her to life. Now this character that I am talking about is not own Female MC. Sierra her normal voice is very smooth kind warm. It like if milk chocolate had a sound. There were accents in this story. Sometimes it was a hit and sometimes it was a miss.

The overall production was great. There were no noises or any other glitches. If you are looking for next read look no further.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Cass Ford. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A with Author Cass Ford
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters?
    • I gave Sierra some information about character backgrounds, like accents. Most of that information was in the novel as I introduced each character, so I didn’t have to give too much detail. Before I chose Sierra to narrate, she sent me a sample scene with Chase and Morgan interacting together. There was some back and forth between us to nail down Chase’s voice, but once she found it, Sierra really ran with the rest of the audiobook. Most of my notes on the full audiobook were small grammar or pronunciation corrections, and there were few. One I remember was the word balayage, which I had to lookup myself. I’m SO pleased with how the audiobook turned out. Sierra did a fantastic job!
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing?
    • Of course! The whole novel concept was inspired by a male pornstar who I actually had lunch with as part of my research. Not gonna say who… The porn sets I visited for research also influenced various scenes and characters in the book. That investigative research was critical in shaping the novel. So many scenes and beats and moments from the book came from real-life scenes and beats and moments.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for writing?
    • Burnout is very real. Working fulltime in television and living that author life on the side can be exhausting. I think managing and balancing my time helps. I’m pretty Type A, so I like to get things done immediately. But being able to sense when I feel overworked and let some emails or tasks slide until I feel up for them, that’s a skill I’ve been working on since the book came out in June. I remind myself that writing and marketing are not life or death. It should be fun, not stressful.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
  • People are entitled to their own opinions. But man are preachy people annoying. Everybody absorbs content differently. I personally take in information much better when reading it, but respect those who best consume content by listening. To those critical of audiobooks, don’t listen to them. But who are you to judge others for their preferred method? You do you, we’ll do us.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • I don’t really have time for writing slumps. Whenever I find time to write, I have to take advantage and dive in. As for reading slumps, I actually just had one. I’d started reading a few books in a row that I just couldn’t get into, so I took a reading break. I was also busy preparing the Prince of Sin audiobook release. But after a few weeks, I realized I missed reading, so to get back on track, I ordered a book in a totally different genre than I’d read recently—non-fiction. And so far, Gene Weingarten’s One Day has been a captivating read.
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series?
    • When it comes to marketing and sales, a series generally makes the most sense. Readers who love Book 1 will continue onto Books 2, 3, 4… Thus, more sales. But I think sequels need to make sense. If they feel forced, readers will know. I recently read a dark romance series where the first and second books captivated me, but the third fell flat. It was slow and stuffed full of dull exposition. I found myself skipping over paragraphs to get through it.
    • I outlined Prince of Sin as a standalone, but had a rough three-book series plan in case I changed my mind. But when I finished writing it, I felt the characters’ stories had been told and closed it out accordingly. Since publishing, the feedback has been that readers would love for Kali or another secondary character to get their own novel. So that is something I’m considering in the future. Would love to hear who my audiobook listeners think deserves a standalone novel!
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams?
    • Strangely, I don’t think I’ve ever dreamed about any Prince of Sin characters or scenes. Over many days for several years, this book consumed my thoughts. But once I fell asleep, it never crept into my mind.
  • What’s your favorite:
    • Food Cheese
    • Song Portland, Maine by Donovan Woods
    • Book The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe
    • Television show Friends
    • Movie E.T. or the Back to the Future series
    • Band The Wood Brothers
    • Sports teams
      • NHL – Toronto Maple Leafs
      • NBA – Toronto Raptors
      • NFL – Pittsburgh Steelers
    • City Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Are any of those things referenced in appearance in your work?
    • Growing up in Toronto, I was raised on hockey. So the Anaheim Ducks vs. L.A. Kings rivalry in Prince of Sin came naturally to me. A Toronto Maple Leafs rivalry didn’t make sense since the book takes place in Southern California. My current work in progress has a few scenes in Toronto, one of which is at a Toronto Maple Leafs game. Another features some fictional Toronto Raptors players out at a bar/nightclub.
  • If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world while writing a book that took place in that same setting, where would you choose?
    • Definitely London, England or New York City, two cities that feel similar to me in some ways. In Los Angeles, I have to drive everywhere and my neighborhood feels somewhat suburban. I’d love to spend a few months living downtown in either of those cities, right in the action, walking and taking the tube or subway to get around.

5 Books That Mean A Lot To Cass Ford
  • A Visit to the Sesame Street Hospital by Deborah Hautzig
    • This is the first book I remember. I had surgery at age three and somebody got me this book to prepare me for the hospital experience. As a kid, my parents read me lots of books, including Sesame Street, Curious George, Dr. Seuss… I always loved story time before bed.
  • Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
    • A teacher recommended this book for my twelfth-grade book report. I absolutely loved it and remember feeling like I’d finally graduated from younger novels, like Gossip Girl.
  • New York by Edward Rutherfurd
    • For a long time, this was my favorite book. Rereading it this year, I was just as enthralled as the first time (around 2010). Fun Fact: When Edward Rutherfurd came on my old morning show as a guest, I was so starstruck, I fell off a chair. Now I’m impatiently waiting on his next release, China.
  • Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren
    • These ladies! The Christina Lauren duo is crushing the game. I read this book on a trip and think subconsciously, it is THE book that turned me into an erotic romance writer. Though I read the Fifty Shades trilogy in two weeks, it didn’t turn me onto erotic romance at all—the characters irritated me. But Bennett and Chloe in Beautiful Bastard… This had to be what did it for me!
  • The Best of Everything by Rona Jaffe
    • THIS. BOOK. IS. AWESOME. It’s the OG Sex and the City, following a group of single ladies trying to hustle and make it in the big city (New York) in the 1950s. I couldn’t put it down. And I just learned it was turned into a movie in 1959, so I’ll be checking that out!

She’s the girl who got away, but now she’s back….

Four years was all it took.

I told myself I didn’t need friends. I didn’t need family. I sure as f**k didn’t need him.

And you know what?

I was right.

He had been inside of me, coursing through my veins.

So I cut and bled Dash Chambers until I was free.

But the day I returned to Six Forks and was thrown at his feet, I realized I would never forget how it felt to have every inch of him inside me…and he’s waiting.

Angel thought if she ran far enough, she’d be free.

What’s mine will always be mine.

This time, I do things my way.

I have to put a big ass trigger warning because there is a lot of triggering things in this book. I may not get all of them but I will try my best so here we go manipulation, obsession, possession, rape, death threats, psychological warfare. I don’t know there was a lot to this book and I found it weirdly intriguing. This is a dark romance novel.

Now if you have not been following this journey of reviews there are three before this one Fear Me, Fear You, and Fear Us.

Ah we are on the fourth book in this series. A lot of my time lately has been to reading this series. Which I’m not complaining about. This book was such an improvement to the last one. As I said in my last review I didn’t think that the third book did much and way of continuing the overall story line. This book however does continue the main story line very well. I would go as far to say that breaking love does have to two story lines but one of our main characters Willow is directly progressing the bigger arc of the story. The second story line being the romance between Dash and herself.

One thing that I have noticed between this and Fear Us is that out male MC are slightly starting to resemble Keiran from the first two books. I mean this in terms of taking control and the you do as I say or you will be punished attitude. Which I know can seem like a bad thing which in this story is. I know that Dash is trying to protect her in his weird way but it comes off wrong.

Willow I wanted to hit. She gets herself into some trouble and instead of telling people what is going on she keeps things to herself. Now when you have people who are as dangerous as this clan is weather you trust them or not I would tell them what is going on. She was making some decision that I did not agree with. Overall though I like this story better than the last because it had a purpose.

B.B. Reid writing is very consistent through out all of her books. This is something that I give her credit for. There is a lot of back and fourth with timelines it seems like every other chapter we are somewhere in the past and everything was really easy to follow.

We have the same narrators as the previous books. If you have rad my past reviews then you know how I feel about them. They are magical together. Ava Erickson and Teddy Hamilton they are great together. They both had to do an accent in this book and they both sounded good. Although I will admit that I have know idea where the accent was suppose to be from.

If you have enjoyed the review leave me a comment and a like.

Thank you for joining me here in our little part of wonderland. Please don’t forget to feed the unicorns on your way out.

Until next time
